Kangaroo Valley School's land was donated by the Osborne family who were the original settlers in Kangaroo Valley.
In 1871, an englishmen by the name of Thomas Greenwood Hird opened the school.
After opening schools in Port Macquarie and West Kempsey he was transferred to schools at Bowenfels, near Lithgow and later Blayney to teach. From there he was transferred to open a new school at Kangaroo Valley and family legend has it that he, with his wife and family, walked from Moss Vale to Kangaroo Valley as there was no coach road between the two centres.
The school, which teaches kids from kindergarten to year 6, expanded over the years from a single sandstone building to several stand alone buildings, with many demountable buildings along the way.
"It's a beautiful old sandstone building," said Mrs Barton.
"In my time it went from about 70 to 165 kids and peaked when the Tallowa Dam was built. It's now down to about 80
"But for a small school we fight above our weight. In the 90s we won the Victor Kelly tennis cup against NSW schools much larger than us.
"At the moment we've got children who are the fourth generation of kids attending our school.
"I encourage anyone - former students, former parents and their families - to come along and celebrate our beautiful school with us."
