Part of the Diamond League series, the annual track and field meeting at Oslo's Bislett Stadium, pitted the Nowra Athletics Club product against a number of the top male runners in the world over the mile distance.
Despite taking line honours in Nice and Decines-Charpieu, recently, the Warilla High School alumnus was slow out of the blocks and found himself mid-pack halfway through the Svein Arne Hansen Dream Mile - which is renowned as one of the most famous races in the world.
But the Australian 1500-metre champion flew home and was unlucky to not finish second, after being pipped on the line by Poland's Marcin Lewandowski.
Fellow Australian Stewart McSweyn won the race by clocking a 3:48.37, to break Craig Mottram's Australian and Oceania record.
McSweyn's mile is the fastest in the world since 2014 and the 22nd fastest in history.
Doha medallist Lewandowski finished in a Polish record time of 3:49.11 while Edwards ran 3:49.27 to finish in third place - moving to third on the Australian all-time list.
Prior to this race, only 63 people had ever run under 3:50 for the mile, meaning Edwards, whose previous personal best was 3:57.30, joins the illustrious list, which will no doubt give him confidence ahead of next month's Tokyo Olympic Games.
