The patient - a known positive case already included in NSW Health coronavirus figures - is being treated in a dedicated COVID ward according to an Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District spokeswoman.
There's currently five active COVID-19 cases in the Wollongong local government area. All of these have been in isolation as they were close contacts of previously announced cases linked to the Bondi cluster.
After months of no locally acquired cases in the region, NSW Health announced the five Illawarra cases last week.
A female and male, both in their 30s, from the region were included in the COVID update on June 21. The following day an Illawarra woman in her 60s was included in the figures, and on June 23 two more Illawarra cases were announced - a man in his 60s and a woman in her 40s.
The hospitalisation of a confirmed case on Wednesday comes after a COVID-positive case attended Wollongong Hospital on Monday night.
An ISLHD spokesperson said earlier this week that that person - also a known case - had been transported to the ED, and treated in a separate area dedicated to patients with suspected infectious diseases.
The patient was assessed, treated and discharged a few hours later.
Since the start of the pandemic there's been a total of 160 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the ISLHD - 125 of these were acquired overseas.
