"There's quite a celebratory mood here as today is our first full day of doing second doses," said Shoalhaven Family Medical Centres Practice Principal, Annette Pham.
"We have given more than 7,000 people their first dose so far."
And while the federal government announced a new recommendation on Thursday June 17 that the AstraZeneca vaccine should only be given to those aged 60 and older, Mrs Pham said that people who have already received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine are safe to have the second dose.
"Even though the government recommendation has changed...if people have had the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine with little or no side effects, then they are safe to have the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, even if they are under the age of 60," she said.
"Regardless, the risk of the blood clots are extremely low.
"Everybody is more hypervigilant now and they are aware of what to look out for, so perhaps its being detected more. People aren't any more at risk and shouldn't be concerned about having the vaccine."
Mrs Pham said she has noticed hesitancy about the AstraZeneca has decreased as more people have the vaccine and are reporting no adverse side effects.
"I would say 90 per cent of people that have come in so far have reported no side effects, and the worst side effects reported to us have just been flu-like symptoms," she said.
"There is still a little bit of hesitancy regarding the first vaccine, but the hesitancy has improved. We have done a lot of our patients now in the phase b category."
Mrs Pham said doses of the Pfizer vaccine will arrive at the Shoalhaven Family Medical Centres July 5.
"We'll be letting our patients know as soon as possible," she said.
