Australia's major cycling body, AusCycling, on Tuesday confirmed the dates and locations for 11 national championships next year, with Wollongong to host the Cyclo-Cross National Championships, and Junior and Masters Road National Championships as part of the 2022 UCI Road World Championships.
The exact date for the cyclo-cross competition is yet to be finalised, but will take place next September. The junior and masters competitions will be held from September 13-16, 2022, before the road world championships run from September 18-25, 2022.
Other major BMX, mountain bike, road and track events will be held across Victoria, Tasmania Queensland and Western Australia next year.
AusCycling's chief executive officer Marne Fechner said she looked forward to seeing more than 2500 riders competing in all cycling disciplines.
"We are pleased to be announcing the majority of dates and locations for the 2022 national championships, with five disciplines across five different states, with more announcements still to come," Fechner said.
"In what continues to be uncertain times, we'd like to thank the many stakeholders and government partners for their help in making these events possible."
Last November, Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery told the Mercury that the run of cycling events would provide a huge and long-lasting economic boost for the region.
"This won't just be a sugar hit. It will not only stimulate employment and spend leading up to it and during the event itself, it puts Wollongong on the map internationally," he said.
"It's the best advertising in terms of tourism that anyone could ask for, and there will be replications of these events in the future because we've got the infrastructure in place."
