The 16-year-old was selected for the elite talent identification squad one-day camp at Sydney's Valentine Sports Park on the back of her strong form with the South Coast Flame.
"I can remember receiving the email inviting me to the camp while I was sitting in bed," Cowen said.
"I originally was in disbelief but once I had the chance to take it all in, I was over the moon."
During the camp, Cowen and the 28 other talented juniors took part in numerous drills while also receiving feedback from the numerous national coaches in attendance.
"With the quality of the players at the camp, the training was very intense and we all improved our games a lot," Cowen, who started playing football as an eight-year-old, said.
"We also took plenty of notes, which with the feedback we got from the coaches, can also help increase our skill level."
The Kiama High School student obviously made a strong impression on the selectors, as she will this week return to Valentine Sports Park for a four-day elite training camp.
Following that, she shift her focus to finishing the NSW Conference League season strong with the Flame, in the hope to achieve further higher honours.
"This camp has given me a taste of what elite training is like and I want to get back in that environment again soon," Cowen, who trains three times a week with her club side, said.
"I'd love to one day play for the Young Matildas, as well as make it to the W-League - which is my long-term goal."
