Who'd ever thought that we would be living in a world where so many things could be bought or arranged at the reach of our finger-tips to a keyboard. Or even our mobile phones.
I remember how amazed people were when an American man survived in his house with no phones and only the internet for a whole 12 months. This included organising food, medical appointments and clothing.
These days people may not know how to survive without the internet to give them the guidance through so many of life's ordeals.
Unfortunately access to the internet is not only easier for the everyday person for their convenience but also the criminal elements.
There are people out there that will use the internet for their advantage, even if it comes from your disadvantage.
In 2020 Australians lost $176,100,000 due to online scams which is a up 23.1 per cent rise from the $142,900,000 from 2019.
That is a total of 216,089 reported scams from victims according to the Australian Competition and Consumers Commission Scamwatch.
So people out there have to make sure they take the correct measures to ensure their online activity is protected and also make sure the ones in your life that aren't to tech savvy are also protected.
A couple of tips:
1. Keep your computers and other devices updated with the latest security software to avoid hacking.
2. Set strong passwords for your on-line accounts.
3. Watch out for phishing scams that create fake websites and emails to draw victims in. If you don't know the link do not click on it.
4. Keep personal information personal. Do not flood social media sites with your personal details which could be used by offenders.
5. Make sure your internet connection is password protected.
6. Make sure your online shopping is done on secure website.
