Hosted by South Coast Beef, this year's event was by far the biggest School Steer Spectacular ever, with 15 schools and 400 students attending on the day and more than 1000 students engaged in the raising and preparation of the steers.
The led steer classes in the show ring (the hoof) was held at the Nowra Showground, followed a few days later by the judging of the carcass as it hangs in the cool-room (the hook).
The results of the hook competition have now been announced with the overall South Coast Beef School Steer Spectacular champion school being Chevalier College.
Reserve champion school was Dapto High School.
The Manildra School Championship (hook) champion light-weight champion beef carcass was won by Chevalier College with a South Devon bred by M and J Hamilton, of Oakfield South Devons, Foxground.
The reserve champion beef carcass was Dapto High School with an Angus bred by B and T Hawthorne of Target Creek Farm, Kangaroo Valley.
The champion medium-weight beef carcass was St Gregory's College with a Murray Grey bred by R and H Hoare, of Cadfor Murray Greys at Binda.
The Open School Challenge champion beef carcass was Yass High School with a Limousin bred by Sarana Limousins, at Crookwell.
An amazing result as this steer was also reserve champion in the hoof section.
Reserve champion beef carcass was Chevalier College with a Angus x Simmental bred by Yallambee Angus.
The South Coast Beef Members Challenge champion carcass for unled steers used by the students in the live cattle assessment section of the program was Brad Hawthorne with an Angus bred by B and T Hawthorne, at Target Creek Farm, Kangaroo Valley.
Reserve champion beef carcass was L and S Pippard with a South Devon bred by Tannoch Farm South Devons, Parma.
Carcasses were judged at Western Sydney Meat Works, also known as Wollondilly abattoir at Picton.
The winning carcass in the Manildra School Championship from Chevalier College was purchased and is on display to the public at Rosebank Meats at Kiama.
The remaining carcasses were purchased by Picton Wholesale Meats.
