Four-time finalist at Margaret River, Culburra Beach's Wright, has not surfed an event there without making it to at least the final eight and she continued that trend on Tuesday, overcoming Costa Rica's Brisa Hennessy (CRI) in heat four of the round of 16.

Less than one point separated Hennessy from upsetting Wright's event record but she could not find a scoring wave, in the clean three-to-four foot surf, to advance.

After two ninth-place finishes, Wright's quarter-final entry puts her back into the final five conversation for the Rip Curl WSL Finals.

Wright will match with Brazil's Tatiana Weston-Webb quarter-final number two.

"I feel like I made a few mistakes in that heat that I shouldn't have made," Wright said.

"Strategically, my heats on the east coast were better than that, so I definitely need to tighten that up, that's for sure.

"Other than a few mistakes particularly late in the heat, I'm glad to take the heat.

"Unlike the East Coast events, Main Break is pretty straightforward with one take-off spot and generally two main sections to score from, so it won't take too much to fix what needs fixing and move on."

Fellow South Coast talent Sally Fitzgibbons, from Gerroa, also had a tight round of 16 showdown but managed to edge Hawaii's Malia Manuel in heat eight 13.33 to 12.57.

Kiama High School alumna Fitzgibbons is now pitted against seven-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore in quarter-final number four.

Tyler's two brothers Owen and Mikey were eliminated from the men's competition on Monday.
