At the second stop on the World Surf League (WSL) 2021 Championship Tour (CT), half the remaining field said goodbye in the two-to-four four waves, including world number one John John Florence, who was knocked out by CT rookie Morgan Cibilic.
Wright, a Culburra Beach Boardrider, recorded six scoring waves - with the top two (4.93 and 4.67) totalling 9.60.
This was enough for him to edged Brazilian Miguel Pupo (9.00) in the round of 32 and progress to the final 16 surfers in the competition.
Awaiting Wright in heat four, when the action resumes, is fellow countrymen Ryan Callinan - who downed United States' Crosby Colapinto (11.40 to 11.06) on Thursday.
Wright's sister Tyler and brother Mikey, as well as Gerroa's Sally Fitzgibbons, were eliminated earlier in the week.
