"There is much excitement in many households around being able to travel to their favourite holiday destinations, or to visit friends and relatives," Rural Doctors Association of Australia [RDAA] President, Dr John Hall, said.
"But with the recent wild weather and widespread destruction it is very important that you research your destination, and the roads you plan on taking to get there, to ensure you can travel safely and uninterrupted.
"Some popular holiday destinations have been badly damaged by floodwaters and many roads remain closed or undergoing repair.
"Waterways have changed and swimming areas that have been safe now may not be.
"We want everyone to come back from their holidays safe and well, so be careful and plan ahead."
Dr Hall is also urging travellers to be COVID safe and COVID vigilant, as cases of community transmission continue to emerge.
"For rural people, most of us are going to be safe within our communities where there is only a very small risk of exposure to potential COVID-19 contacts.
"However ,once we start to travel, go to larger cities and move around, we need to ensure we maintain all of the COVID safe practices we now know so well.
"Use the COVIDSafe app to track potential contacts, keep 1.5m away from other people, regularly hand sanitise and wear a mask if you are going to be exposing yourself and others in situations where social distancing is difficult.
"But as always on the long weekend or in the school holidays - there are many people on the roads. Don't be in a hurry, allow plenty of time to reach your destination, take regular breaks and don't drive fatigued," Dr Hall said.
"When the Easter Bunny arrives we want everyone safe and sound, tucked up in their beds after an uneventful journey, with plenty of eggs left to eat after safe travel home!"
