It means local residents can now choose to undergo spinal surgery close to home, whereas they previously had to travel to Wollongong, Canberra or Sydney.
Orthopaedic spine surgeon Dr Geoffrey Rosenberg has been consulting each fortnight at Nowra Private Hospital since late-2020, and said he was pleased to now perform the first spine surgery in the region.
"I think it's wonderful because patients can be in familiar surroundings, they can have their family close by to support them and that's really important for their recovery," Dr Rosenberg said.
"Nowra Private Hospital has great rehabilitation facilities too and the whole place is looking good after the renovation. I'm looking forward to being there more and more."
Chief Executive Officer, Prue Buist, said the entire team was excited by the milestone.
"We're all very passionate about striving to provide the best health care for our community, so to expand our services to include spinal surgery, right here in Nowra, that's a major goal reached for our hospital," Ms Buist said.
Nowra Private Hospital recently underwent a $9 million renovation which created an additional operating theatre, patient ward and oncology unit, plus the refurbishment of three existing operating theatres.
Patient rooms were converted from shared rooms to private rooms and the hospital was given a general facelift inside and out. Nowra Private Hospital can now also cater for cochlear implant surgery - with the first procedure being performed there in mid-March.
Dr Geoffrey Rosenberg is an experienced, Australian-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon. His areas of interest are in adult degenerative lumbar spinal conditions, with specific expertise in complex reconstruction, revision and minimally invasive spine surgery.
