In a clever twist in celebration of the return of the Illawarra name to our region's NBL club, Wollongong burger bar His Boy Elroy is giving customers a chance to earn 15 per cent off their meal on game days simply by doing the "ILL-A-WAR-RA" chant.
"This has been a six month issue with the club's name and there is nothing better than the 'Illawarra' chant that rings out at the WEC during games so we figured it was a great way to celebrate," Bis Boy Elroy co-owner Lachlan Stevens said.
His Boy Elroy, which was crowned Illawarra's business of the year last year, publicly withdrew its support from the NBL club last year on learning the NBL had stripped the Hawks of the Illawarra name.
Mr Stevens said the return of the Illawarra name to the club was a "positive".
"Bringing it back is a sign of strength for the community to support the team from a financial perspective," he said.
"The main priority for Hawks now comes to the community engagement push out for the rest of the season. We've had a couple of meetings with team to discuss things and we will be open to working with them in the future.
"The Illawarra Hawks are an important part of our community and anything we can do to push their brand forward we'll be happy to be involved."
He said the issue of the name will have left a scar with the community which will need to be healed.
"We keep our finger on the pulse, we have a lot of Hawks fans who frequent His Boy and there is a slight degree of distrust," he said.
"A lot of people believe this was a marketing play or don't know exactly where the line between the NBL and the Hawks is in this whole saga. There is a lot of love for the club and what it represents and that really needs to be teased out in the coming months by Dorry (Club president Dorry Kordahi) and the Hawks to build back the trust in the club."
