Despite a "defensive" outlook, the Burri Point House overlooking Jimmy's Island at Guerilla Bay, exudes serenity, lead architect Steve Andrea said.
"On approach there's a lot of concrete and copper, it's quite a defensive approach but on arrival you're immediately greeted by the off-form concrete spiral stair which takes you up to the main living level," Mr Andrea said.
"The main living levels are basically two concrete floors enclosed by glass ... so you've got this amazing framed view ... you're just drawn into."
The multi-million dollar home has won several awards, including being named the 2020 Housing Industry Association's Home of the Year for the ACT and Southern NSW.
The design of the "bold" building was informed primarily by its extremely high bushfire risk, with concrete, copper and steel chosen not for their design but fire safety.
The concrete, copper and steel creation meets the highest level of bushfire safety requirements. When the home is completely closed up there is no gap greater than 2mm, to protect it from ember attacks.
"It had to be a very robust house to survive its coastal exposed situation. You had to really defend against the elements," Mr Andrea said.
"Whilst it had to be totally enclosable to protect itself against fires, we wanted to be able to open up and make the most of the experience of the views to the South Coast."
Owners Belinda and David Kenyon handed the reins to the designers and builders with a "blank canvas" guiding them to create a family home that could "bring generations together".
The six-bedroom home took five years to complete from the time the land was purchased and two years to build.
The Smith and Primmer Builders project, which was designed by Karin McNamara, includes bespoke steel windows and Venetian rendered off-form concrete throughout the home which took months to complete.
The home includes a double garage, boat storage and a swimming pool.
