A cast of only two, a chamber orchestra of six instruments, cabaret style seating with limited numbers and an off-Broadway show. It sounds like a small venture, but it packs a big punch.
At last week's final rehearsal, the small preview audience were overwhelmed with the poignancy, atmosphere and performances.
"The intimate atmosphere created in the School of Arts was perfect for this dissection of a couple's relationship. It even seemed like the orchestra was just playing in your loungeroom," one audience member said.
The Last Five Years reveals the stormy relationship between Cathy and Jamie.
The clever staging has Jamie telling his story as it blossoms and dies while Cathy tells her side in reverse, starting with distress of their breakup and working backwards to their meeting.
Jane McIntosh as Cathie and Nathan Lomas as Jamie are familiar faces to AMTC patrons. They last performed together in Les Miserables when Jane played Fantine and Nathan played Jean Valjean (winning the Canberra Area Theatre Award for best leading actor in a musical).
