With a predominately but swinging westerly wind combined with a very high and fast run out tide it made for very challenging conditions for the five boats that competed.
Racing this week was young Cameron Hertzberg in his Laser 'No More No Less', Mick Fairbairn in his Finn 'GOF' and sailing in Spirals were Cameron (Cam) Phelps in 'Green Titan', Wayne Norris in 'Never Satisfied' and Steve Phelps in 'Moving Along'.
With the seven-to -0 knot westerly, the start commenced on a run with Steve getting the best of the start closely followed by young Cameron.
Cameron, however on a gybe just after the start, went for a quick swim.
Next over the line was Cam, Wayne then Mick. Steve maintained the lead for the first half a lap with Mick quickly moving through to second.
Around midway down the first leg Steve, not paying full attention to the wind, got caught unprepared by a gust resulting in him having an uncharacteristic capsize.
With his centerboard up for the run then fully falling out during the capsize it took him some to recover.
Mick rounded the bottom (east) mark first followed by Wayne with Cam on his heels.
Steve and Cameron were together a bit of a way back with Cameron having the inside advantage at the buoy.
On completion of the first lap, Mick was ahead, then Wayne and Cam close by and a gap back to Steve who had now opened a gap on the work from Cameron.
The second and third laps of the race defined the outcome with the wind fully dropping out in locations and becoming more variable in direction.
Mick being sufficiently ahead managed to maintain the wind to the top mark.
Wayne caught on the edge of the dying breeze used his skills to great effect to maintain some headway back up the course against the strong current.
Cam was stuck in a wind hole close to the southern bank but able to maintain his position on the river however not able to make any headway for a significant time.
Steve was still on the run when the wind dropped and kept moving to the bottom mark in the current, but was then pushed well beyond the mark until sufficient wind returned.
Cameron also used the current to good effect arriving at the bottom mark just as some of the wind returned.
Over these second and third lap, with the super-fast run out tide and variable wind it was a combination of skill and a lot of luck to be in the right place at the right time.
The westerly wind constantly varied from north to south between one-to 10-knots.
By the completion of the third lap Mick sailing skilfully had a dominating lead with large gaps between Wayne in second, Steve now in third, Cam fourth and finally Cameron who was gaining a lot of skills in these very difficult conditions.
The wind picked up a bit more steady for the fifth lap, again predominately from the west.
Mick being a lap ahead by now finished on completion of the 6th lap.
During the fifth or sixth lap for everyone else the wind shifted, building in strength but turning fairly steady to the south east allowing all to complete the race with much more confidence in the wind direction.
Wayne crossed the line in second position 11 minutes after Mick, Steve four minutes later in third and Cam in fourth about five minutes later.
Young Cameron finished a lap short with his finish time adjusted in result calculations.
Cam being the last to physically finish managed to enjoy a good final leg and some reaches across the river after the race in the now 12-to-15 knot breeze.
For both the Bomaderry Bowling Club Point Score and the Kel Campbell Championship was Mick was the winner over Wayne by about three minutes with Steve in third, then Cam and Cameron.
Congratulations to Mick for his convincing double win and also well done to young Cameron for completing the race in what was very difficult but good skill development conditions.
