Members of the Shoalhaven Youth Orchestra (SYO) met at the annual general meeting recently to hear how the Shoalhaven's regional orchestra for young musicians had managed to continue making music during a rocky 2020.
Students transitioned to Zoom rehearsals with Musical Directors John Dunstan and Eryn Deys and the orchestra invested time into developing its long term initiatives for increasing enrolments and interest for orchestral instruments in the area.
The orchestra came together for the second half of the year and was able to continue rehearsing classical, film and pop music in a Covid safe way together.
At the AGM Haseena Tweddle was appointed president. Haseena is known by many in the community for her passion for youth leadership initiatives, her involvement with the Berry Rotary Club and her smiling face behind the counter at her business, the Berry Music Centre.
Local educator Jenny Cork has taken up the position of vice president.
The founder of the SYO Margaret Bowcher has made a return as secretary and local business owner and accountant Elizabeth Gillen has taken on the role of treasurer.
Thanks goes to outgoing committee members Nick Minogue, Liz Dolan and John Pearce for their work over the years with the SYO.
The SYO is getting ready to run a holiday day-camp for primary and high school music students from January 18-19 January 2021 at the Berry Public School. Find more details here.
2021 enrolments for the Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings ensemble are now open.
