PFAS - per- and pol- fluoroalkyl substances, are a group of chemicals that include perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), which were historically used by defence in their firefighting foams and have been discovered at numerous defence and other locations around the country.
In January 2017, Defence started a detailed environmental investigation into the presence of PFAS substances on and in the vicinity of Jervis Bay Range Facility.
The objective of the environmental investigation was to identify the nature and extent of PFAS in the environment from the use of legacy firefighting foam at the base.

Defence says PFAS has been detected both on and off the base/range in the area and flagged warnings for local resident and visitors.
It says the most likely way to be exposed to PFAS was by either drinking or eating above recommended levels of water or contaminated seafood.
The walk-in session to be held at the Jervis Bay Primary School Hall, Dykes Avenue, Jervis Bay on Thursday, December 3 and will provide residents of the area with the latest information on the PFAS investigation and the proposed management plan.
Defence says the session will provide the local community an update on the investigations at the Jervis Bay Range Facility and nearby areas including HMAS Creswell.
PFAS has also been detected at nearby HMAS Albatross and a number of other locations within the city.
Members of the investigation team will be available to discuss the results of the final Ecological Risk Assessment, the supplementary Detailed Site Investigation report and the PFAS Management Area Plan, which includes the Ongoing Management Plan.
The walk-in session will be held from 3.30pm to 5pm (visit anytime, with the presentation will be at 4pm).
It is requested those wishing to attend, RSVP for the session by contacting the investigation team by Monday, November 30.
