The boy was found unresponsive in the pool, which was situated in the front yard of his Hobart, Tasmania, home.
Tasmania Police and emergency services were called to the property just after 4.30pm on Saturday, but the boy could not be revived and died at the scene.
In other news:
A Tasmania Police spokesperson said police offered their heartfelt condolences to the boy's family and friends.
However, they said it also served as a tragic reminder of the importance of adequate pool fencing.
Local government by-laws require all pools to be fenced and that children should be supervised around any pools.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
