TWO Batemans Bay sports clubs are in the running for $25,000, as part of Sportsbet's Hotham Day IV: Backing the Battler initiative.
The Batemans Bay Seahawks and Batemans Bay Tigers are two of the 14 sports clubs from around Australia that will receive a financial boost from the Friday, October 9 race day at Ballarat.
On Tuesday, October 6, each of the 14 clubs will be assigned a horse during the barrier draw - with their horse wearing the corresponding club's colours during the race (which will then be sent to each club as a memento).
On the day, first past the post receives $25,000 towards their sporting club, with each of the other 13 finishers also receiving a prize, ranging from $12,500 (second) to $2,000 (seventh to 13th) - with last collecting $4,000.
"After applying online, with a video explaining why we deserved to be a part of this event, we were recently informed we'd made the cut - which was really exciting," Seahawks men's senior coach Michael Kenny said.
"Between the bushfires and COVID-19 pandemic, it's been a tough year for everyone and this is a chance to have some fun and put a smile on people's faces."
As Kenny alludes to, 2020 has been disastrous for the Hanging Rock Oval-based club, after being forced to withdraw from the AFL Canberra competition due to the coronavirus.
"With everything that's gone on the past 12 months, a lot of people around town are doing it tough," Kenny, who thanked Sportsbet for supporting community sport, said.
"As such, the club has missed out on some sponsorship money but being involved in the Hotham will be a massive boost for us and set the club up for years to come.
"Especially as there are two clubs from the region involved, it'll lift the spirits of everyone - hopefully we can run first and the Tigers second."
Joining the two South Coast clubs in the draw are the Cardross Football Netball Club, North Mandurah Football Club, Dolls Point Football Club, Lexton Football Netball Club, King Island Football Association, Queanbeyan District Cricket Club, Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club, Trevallyn Cricket Club, Bonbeach Cricket Club, Tallangatta Golf Club, Imperial Lions and Orbost Snowy Rovers Football Netball Club.
