We have all been waiting anxiously to see what a COVID-19 summer would look like and on Monday, we got a good indication. And it involves beach towels.
Or being one beach towel apart, perhaps more correctly.
It appears ensuring people are social distancing will be a key to managing our summer recreational spaces and we know being out in the warm sun is more advantageous than being inside.
That's a fact. Put it this way, it's more advantageous you are at the beach on Boxing Day rather than the Boxing Day sales.
"We know outdoor environments are better, that's because they're well ventilated environments, there's also some thought that the UV light might degrade the virus," NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said.
"... Yes of course if they've got close contact at beaches it can transmit, but certainly there's less risk than if you're in an indoor environment at home."
The direction from NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Monday will however provide a few challenges - especially in the Shoalhaven.
Our city is a massive area, boasting more than 100 beaches - many of them are unmanned by our hard-working surf lifesaving volunteers.
The question is what moves are authorities contemplating on how to deal with crowds at our summer hot spots like the high usage beaches.
Surf lifesaving bosses say they are not the authority to enforce the new rules - they will contact Shoalhaven City Rangers or NSW Police if a problem arises.
If the instruction is we need to social distance on our beaches then that is a pretty clear and simple guideline to follow. If social distancing is what we need to do to keep our beaches open, then let's do that for the sake of our summer.
This policy and/or approach has been flagged as the same which will be applied to our outdoor recreational spaces.
As long as social distancing is being applied responsibly we will be able to enjoy some level of our summer fun. Quite simply, to ensure our summer goes the distance, we all need to do our best to maintain our distance.
Remember, this COVID-19 summer, it's all about the beach towel.
