Heading into the ninth and final round of the 2020 Shoalhaven District Football Association first grade season, eight teams were a mathematical chance of making the top four.
St Georges Basin had already secured top spot and their first competition championship.
Last year's grand finalists Bomaderry and Huskisson-Vincentia were locked into second and third and their final round results would determine who finishes higher and gets that all-important double bite at the cherry.
Then in terms of the fourth and final spot of the Blackmore Bolden Shield finals series, Milton-Ulladulla, Sussex Inlet, Shoalhaven United, Illaroo and Callala were all a chance of sneaking into the top four, depending on their results - with all sides knowing a win was crucial.
"We were very relaxed coming into the final round," Shoalhaven United coach Alex Dicker said.
"We knew we had to do our job before we could worry about any other results - so that was our focus."
No team showed this urgency more than Dicker's United, who upset Basin 5-3 - which handed the minor premiers, who were missing Dane McGinn, Blake McGinn, Flynn Meyer, Fraser MacQueen and Sean Peek, their first loss of 2020.
"We went back to basics this week, using a back four to contain Basin's front three as well as replicating reserve grade's midfield shape," Dicker said.
"That allowed the large number of players backing up from reserve grade to fit in seamlessly.
"It must have worked as our reserve grade boys played out of their skin.
"Combine that with our best performance of the season and we were good value for the win in my eyes."
At Lyrebird Park, the Bears jumped out of the gates thanks to an Alex Rogan opener in the 15th minute.
Dragons' Tim White cancelled that out seven minutes later, only for Billy Wallington to restored the host advantage in the 24th minute.
This is how it remained until half-time before the game really came to life.
Rogan had his second less than a minute after the resumption, to put the Bears up 3-1.
Luke Reid pulled one back for the visitors in the 54th minute, before strikes from substitute Isaac Quirque (69th) and Wallington (89th) secured the Bears a memorable win.
Basin skipper Brenden Hobbs scored a late consolation goal, in the 90th minute, to make it 5-3 at full-time.
"We had 15 outstanding performances, so it's hard to single anyone out but Alex Rogan scored one of the best goals I've seen down here in a long time," Dicker said.
"Shane Button and Jaxon Forrester also deserve special mentions, racking up more than 140 minutes of football each."
This victory, United's third of the season, saw them leapfrog both Milton and Sussex into fourth spot - with the latter two not being able to secure all three points.
The Panthers, despite playing at Lighthouse Oval, went down 4-1 to Bomaderry - which cemented the latter second spot on the table.
In the win, Ben Seyffer got a brace, while Brendan Kellett and Jordan Haddow both grabbed one goal each.
While the Seahawks could only manage a nil-all draw with Shoalhaven Heads-Berry at the Thompson Street Sporting Complex.
The other two sides in contention for the final spot, Illaroo and Callala, shared the spoils 2-all at Sharman Park.
The final result of the weekend saw Huskisson rout Culburra 11-nil at the Huskisson Sporting Field.
Gary Masterson led the way for the Seagulls with four goals, as Brendan Hiriart chipped in with a double.
The final five goals were shared between Jeremy Smith, Lewis Archibald, Lachlan Ford and Jim Niemeier.
These five results, therefore, see the regular season table finish as St Georges Basin (22), Bomaderry (21), Huskisson (20), United (12), Sussex (11), Milton (10), Illaroo (nine), Callala (nine), Heads (six) and Culburra (four).
As such, Basin will take on Bomaderry in Saturday's major semi-final at Ison Park, while Huskisson plays United in Sunday's minor semi-final.
"Finals football is in the club's DNA - anything less is considered a failure," Dicker said.
"We are excited to be in the finals and will give the Husky game everything we've got, as we've got nothing to fear."
Both matches will be played at South Nowra's Ison Park, kicking off at 3pm.
