French faces 18 charges in total, with most related to the supply of cannabis, in addition to a charge related to methylamphetamine supply, cocaine supply and Sildenfil, a prescription medication for erectile dysfunction.
His defence lawyer, Adam Sumbak, argued French has a limited criminal history, strong community ties, financial obligations, and supports his elderly parents as well as his de facto partner and her eight-year-old daughter.
He said French has ongoing health issues, and recently had lung surgery from which he still feels the effects.
The prosecution said "returning French to his previous life" would not be enough to guarantee he would not reoffend.
"He is charged with a series of offences that endanger the safety of the community, and we cannot mitigate that risk if he is bailed," the prosecution said.
"He faces a full-time custodial sentence if convicted."
Magistrate Gabriel Fleming agreed.
"You're before the courts charged with 18 criminal charges related to the trafficking of cannabis," she said.
"I accept your criminal history is limited, however, these charges are very serious. The prosecution case rests largely on telephone intercepts which show a continued pattern of behaviour.
"There is an unacceptable risk of reoffending."
French is due back in court on September 18.
