The Swiss government this week extended a ban on events of more than 1,000 people until the end of September, leaving the country unable to stage the UCI's flagship contest.

So now cycling's global governing body will attempt to move the tournament from Aigle-Martigny to a new location for the event set for September 20-27, promising a decision by September 1.

"Given the sporting importance of the UCI Road World Championships for cycling, the UCI would like to clarify that it will work towards finding an alternative project to ensure the 2020 edition of the event can take place, with the priority being in Europe and at the dates initially scheduled," read a UCI statement.

"It could include all or some of the planned races.

"The UCI will look for a host city that would be able to provide a route as challenging as that in Aigle-Martigny and which would therefore suit the same type of riders who had initially planned to participate in Switzerland.

"Conscious that time is of the essence for the athletes, the National Federations and all implicated parties, the UCI will communicate more information as soon as possible and will take a final decision by September 1 at the latest."

British Cycling backed the move, with chief executive Julie Harrington issuing a short statement.

"Naturally this is very disappointing news but the right decision has been made by our colleagues at the UCI," said Harrington.

"Our riders as well as competitors from every part of the cycling world will feel particular disappointment at not being able to race in Switzerland and we are committed to working with our fellow national federations, as well as the UCI, to ensure the healthy and full return of international cycle sport.

"Lastly, we extend our sympathies to the local organising committee in Aigle-Martigny - their passion for our sport was evident as we worked with them to share our experiences from hosting Yorkshire 2019."
