In their kick-off to the modified 2020 season, Angus Maddinson and Mark Brandon scored tries for the Shoals, in their 17-12 loss at Vikings Oval.
The latter converted one of his two kicks in the defeat.
The Vikings' victory was set up by five-pointers to Chris Ravarua, Joel Diggins and Tommy Sawden - who also added one goal.
Elsewhere in round one, Campbelltown defeated Kiama 33-22, Avondale downed Shamrocks 45-34 and Tech Waratahs smashed Camden 41-12.
Earlier in the day, Shoalhaven went down to Vikings 14-10 in reserve grade - thanks to tries from the hosts' Henry Vanderglas and Michael Maidment.
In round two, the Shoals will play their first home game of the season on Saturday, when they host Camden.
First grade kicks off at 3.15pm, following reserves at 1.30pm.
