Ethan Gauldi has been convicted of possessing an unauthorised firearm, possessing an unregistered firearm and possessing ammunition without holding a licence/permit.
Court papers said when police officers attended a garage converted into a workshop and studio in Nowra around 3.30pm on December 23 last year they allegedly found a firearm on the lounge room floor next to a bed.
Court papers said it had a wooden stock wrapped in blue electrical tape, a barrel and a firing mechanism constructed of spring loaders from a sliding door.
Police said a .234 cartridge, also wrapped in blue electrical tape, was stuck in the barrel and appeared to have several imprints from a striking pin on the firing cap.
A further search found numerous different varieties of ammunition throughout the property including some again wrapped in electrical tape.
The court was told Gauldi had never held a permit to possess a firearm and was on parole at the time on strict conditions including not possessing ammunition or a firearm.
In Nowra Local Court Magistrate Erin Kennedy sentenced Gauldi to six months' jail and also fined him $550 for possessing ammunition without a permit.
He will be eligible for release on November 26.
