It marks their 100th year as a club.

The Ron Costello Oval-based club had numerous celebrations planned including special commemorative jerseys for all six of their grades and the unveiling of their team of the century - at a dinner following their round two clash with local rivals Warilla-Lake South.

But unfortunately due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Sharks, following a recent club meeting, decided to postpone their centenary celebrations until 2021.

"Ever since I joined the committee back in 2013, people have been talking about and looking forward to our centenary year," Sharks secretary Mitch Silk said.

"It's a big deal for any club and we'd put a lot of time and effort into ensuring we did the whole thing justice.

"But in the end, it was an easy decision to effectively postpone our 100th year and wait until we can celebrate it properly."

While Silk only started his association with the maroon and gold family as a junior in 2003, he appreciates how special the club is.

"The city of Shellharbour is a big place these days, but in the middle of that big city is the same little village with a lot of the same families that were there 100 years ago when the club was established," Silk said.

"The club means a lot to numerous people and for me, it's bigger than just a celebration of the footy club, it's a celebration of the greater Shellharbour community.

"Ultimately, though, I'm glad now that we've made a call to postpone the celebrations, as tough of a pill as it was to swallow at the time.

"A couple of the older guys, who had committed to coming back this season, will probably sit out this year, to ensure they're fighting fit for next year.

"We'll now put the celebrations on the shelf and concentrate on having a really good crack at winning our second first grade title in three seasons.

"Teams like Kiama and Jamberoo look really strong but I'm confident an Abed [Atallah] and his squad."

Once the 2020 season, scheduled to kick-off on the weekend of July 18 and 19, wraps up, Silk and his team will restart preparations for next year's celebrations.

"We've already got a tentative booking for our team of the century dinner next year," the 33-year-old said.

"In a way, the pandemic will give us even more time to make sure we really put on a great event.

"All our on-and-off field gear will still carry the 100-year logo this season and our main playing strip and training shirts are both based on traditional Shellharbour jerseys.

"We will also have another one-off all black set of jerseys to commemorate the club's first premiership, that we will save for next year.

"There's no ignoring the reality 2020 is a big year in our history.

"But we just need to concentrate on what's ahead of us, to ensure the club and game of rugby league maintains a presence amid all the craziness."
