Terara Sands have enlisted Riverwatch to undertake the work on Pig Island as part of their development application approval in the sand recovery process.

In conjunction with Terara Sands, members started the project last year which was directly opposite their worksite, forming 30 metres of geo fabric sand sausage and then building on top of it with another one to retain the foot of the bank.

With the recent flooding parts of the work was undermined but it stopped the erosion of the bank in the area behind the sausage barrier.

Last week another two sausages were added to the top, slightly set back from each other then Terara Sands battered the bank back down behind the work.

The area was planted out with lomandras, a plant which has a strong root system to help retain the bank.

Both days were finished with a barbecue put on by Steve and the boys of Terara Sands.

Steve also looked after all material costs of the project and provided enough to start more projects.

At this stage future Riverwatch working bees have been postponed due to the coronavirus.
