The St George Illawarra forward has just finished auctioning off 12 of his rugby league jerseys individually, including ones from the Newcastle Knights, Brisbane Broncos, Dragons and Fijian national team.

All of the $3160 raised is going towards a bushfire relief fund - with a Knights 2015 Anzac Day jersey fetching the most with $400.

"Over the summer, I saw a number of other players do similar initiatives with their gear and I thought I'd do my part to help out," Sims said.

"With being injured now and the season just starting, I thought it was a perfect time for me to sell off the 12 jerseys - which are better off with someone else than sitting in my cupboard.

"Obviously there's a fair bit of sentimental value in them, especially the Fijian ones and it'll be sad to see them go.

"At the end of the day, I've played in them and enjoyed them.

"It's now time for someone else to enjoy them the way I did."

While Sims may have parted ways with these jerseys, it compares little to what many families lost over the summer.

"The response by the general public was fantastic and I'm really proud to have raised the money I have," he said.

"Every dollar counts, especially to those unfortunate families who lost everything in the bushfires.

"It would have been a massive ordeal for them over summer and I just hope my contribution can aid that in some way."

From a personal point of view, Sims' family had to experience some of that stress over summer, as his older sister Ruan was on the frontline fighting the fires.

"Each day when Ruan went out as a firefighter was quite stressful, as we sometimes didn't hear from her for days at a time," he said.

"But we knew she was doing what she loved and helping the community - they all deserve tremendous credit for the work they did.

"Our ordeal was nothing compared to some of the families up and down the South Coast and it's amazing to see our whole community rally around them."

Sims, 28, in expected to return to the field in round six from a forearm injury sustained at the NRL Nines in Perth.
