Often it's really hard to know what a certain job or career path is going to be like until you start doing it.
But that doesn't mean gaining an insight into the ins and outs of particular roles isn't going to be helpful.
In fact, hundreds of students from Nowra who have taken part in Shoalhaven City Council's Economic Development's Professional Snapshot program have found it immeasurably helpful.
The program is a close collaboration between council and the Shoalhaven Professional Business Association (spba) and supported by the University of Wollongong Shoalhaven Campus, local businesses and high schools.
Now in its 11th year, the Professional Snapshot program will, for the first time, be delivered to students in Ulladulla.
To ensure students get a real taste of what a career in the Shoalhaven can offer, local businesses open their doors and provide practical workshops.
The spba president Anna Finch said the purpose of the program was to educate high school students about the many professional career opportunities available to them, right here in the Shoalhaven.
"The spba Professional Snapshot is aimed at high school students in Years 10 and 11 and timed just before subject selection, assisting them to make an informed choice," she said.
''Business representatives are encouraged to share their real-life experiences and to give an honest representation of what professional life is like in the Shoalhaven, as well as detailing practical information on how to obtain employment and the necessary study required.
"We are proud to be offering such an innovative program, which supports future young professionals make educated decisions about their careers.
"Thank you to all the businesses who are involved in this year's Professional Snapshot program."
The 2020 program is now filled with the Nowra initiative to be held on March 4 with Ulladulla piloting on March 11.
Some of the industries represented in the program include civil engineering, law, finance, human resources, chiropractic, mental health, disability, marketing and more.
