If you've ever dreamed of seeing your words in print, the So You Want To Be A Writer event at Nowra Anglican College on Saturday 7 March, 2020, could be your first step to making that dream come true.
Hosted by Allison Tait, a local, internationally published bestselling children's author, the event aims to unlock the secrets of the writing and publishing world while raising money for the Shoalhaven Readers' & Writers' Festival.
"The two-hour seminar will cover some of the big questions about writing fiction and non-fiction," Ms Tait said.
"How do you get started? How do you write a book? How do you get published? Plus, the opportunity to ask your own questions."
Allison is the author of six published children's novels, with a new one out later this year, plus four non-fiction books and countless articles for magazines, newspapers, websites and more.
The seminar, based on the top-rating podcast of the same name, which is co-hosted by Tait and Valerie Khoo, CEO of the Australian Writers' Centre, will aim to give local writers access to useful, practical information - with a healthy dose of inspiration and motivation.
"I've invited two very special guest speakers along to share their experiences," Allison said.
"Mark Whittaker is a local Walkley Award-winning journalist, non-fiction author, and podcaster, while Pamela Cook is a popular, bestselling novelist."
Mark Whittaker lives on the NSW South Coast. In a career spanning 35 years, he has been a staff writer on the Weekend Australian Magazine, has authored, co-authored and/or ghostwritten 14 books and has been a regular freelance contributor to Good Weekend magazine.
Pamela Cook is an author, podcaster and teacher. Her stories feature complex women and fraught family relationships. She has had five novels published; Blackwattle Lake, Essie's Way, Close To Home, The Crossroads and Cross My Heart.
Pamela is the co-host of Writes4Women, a podcast focusing on women, writing and feminism.
Allison said one of the best things about such an event was the chance to meet other writers in the local area.
"Writing can be a solitary game. Finding your tribe can really help you to learn about the craft and keep up with the industry. Plus, it will be great fun! Every writer I know simply loves talking about writing, so this is your chance!"
Tickets for the event are $50 (plus booking fee), including light refreshments.
The event is open to all writers over the age of 16 and all genres are welcome.
Proceeds from the event will go towards the Shoalhaven Readers' & Writers' Festival.
