Shane Noel Barker, 37, did not enter any pleas to charges of attempted murder, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault (domestic violence related) and breaching an apprehended violence order when he appeared in Nowra Local Court on Tuesday, January 28.
The charges stem from an alleged incident at a Young Avenue, Nowra address on Friday, January 24.
Police were called to the home around 8am following reports a man had allegedly hit a woman in the head with a spanner before attempting to drown her in a bathtub.
Officers from South Coast Police District attended and spoke to Barker, who allegedly refused to leave the home and poured petrol all over his body, and threatened to set himself on fire.
Police alleged he was armed with knives and a spanner at the time.
Specialist police negotiated with the Barker, who left the premises through the back door before being arrested without incident.
A crime scene was established, and an investigation started by the Southern Region Domestic Violence High Risk Offenders Team.
The woman, who was known to the man, was taken to Shoalhaven District Hospital where she is recovering from her injuries.
Barker was taken to Nowra Police Station and charged.
He appeared before a special sitting of Nowra Local Court on January 25, where he was refused bail to reappear on January 28.
On Tuesday, Barker did not apply for bail, which was formally refused by Nowra Magistrate Gabriel Fleming.
The matter will return to court in March.
