Captain Craig first joined HMAS Albatross in 1983, where he spent most of his career, and has just returned to the Shoalhaven after a three-year posting in London.
He said he was pleasantly surprised and humbled to be recognised for a job he'd been enjoying for over 38 years.
"We are very privileged in the military as we are trusted with positions of responsibility which are very rewarding and satisfying," he said.
Although difficult to single out a favourite, commanding 816 Squadron was a standout.
"I also enjoyed my tenure as Commanding Officer Undergraduates at the Australian Defence Force Academy," he said.
"Any aspects of my job which involved mentoring and developing our next generation of officers and sailors have been especially gratifying."
For Captain Craig, the navy, at times, had been quite the family affair.
"A unique highlight would have to be being posted to Albatross at the same time as my wife (who was an Air Force Nursing Officer, our two sons (both Aviation Warfare Officers like myself) and my brother (an Airframes an Engines technician).
"I don't think many people could say that and it certainly made for some interesting conversations in the mess."

He started at HMAS Albatross as an apprentice airframes and engines technician, then spent time at various units at Albatross culminating with his appointment as Deputy Commander Fleet Air Arm in 2015.
"During my time flying the Seahawk we have been involved in supporting our community in times of need and it is fantastic to see the great job our Navy is doing, alongside so many volunteers and civilian agencies, to support those affected by the fires in the last few months."
It was also a privilege for him to spend three years as the Naval Attache in London.
"My prime function there was facilitating and managing interactions between the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Navy, where we enjoy a very close relationship."
"During our time there my wife and I were lucky enough to host a number of visiting friends, family and dignitaries.
"We attended many military commemorations and Royal events and we also made the most of the opportunity to travel."
Having just returned from his London posting, he plans to spend Australia Day catching up with his family in the Shoalhaven.
