The proverb 'You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar' offers a message that should be taken on board by everyone.
Ok so no-one is really interested in catching flies but the message in this proverb has great merit. Simply translated it means It is easier to get what you want by flattering people and being polite to them than by making demands.
I know kind and considerate words always work for me. In fact I will go out of my way to help someone who has addressed me pleasantly with a request, rather than demanded I do something.
That is not to say I haven't had a demanding attitude at times myself - I think most of us would say the same if we are to be honest. But I quickly realise that harsh words, stomping feet or a raised voice don't really get you anywhere. And rightly so.
I know that my level of helpfulness can dissipate with those who demand aggressively or with entitlement. It is not a matter of obstinence - or maybe it is a little - it is more a matter of determining that poor manners and attitude do not deserve reward.
On the flip side, I will go out of my way to help those who have a kind and considerate disposition.
For the most part we are all just a cog in the motor of life representing one component of all that makes the world go round.
The recent bushfire crisis that impacted this and many other communities in Australia demonstrated how much can be achieved when people band together sharing support, resources, and reaching out with kindness.
Kind people doing wonderful things to help bushfire-affected residents in this community have inspired friendships, provided valuable support and achieved wonderful outcomes.
In the face of adversity human kindness has most definitely been a winner. Tolerance has been another.
There are many people in our community who will be struggling because of the bushfires long after the smoke has settled. Let's be considerate with our expectations of others, mindful of what they might be going through (be aware of a bigger picture) and reach out with kindness. Let's make a caring society a resource for recovery.
