However, a local resident, driving who was driving on Ryans Lane, Pyree, was greeted with this grim sight.
"I was just driving up the road and initially drove past when I got a glimpse of white out of the corner of my eye. I thought 'more dumping' as we get a lot of rubbish dumped out here," the resident said.
"I am always cleaning up and thought it was another load of Gyprock and I backed up.
"Then I realised it was not Gyprock but a mass of pigeons."
He made the grim discovery Sunday afternoon about 5pm.
He tried to contact the police and the rangers from Shoalhaven City Council.
The resident found six survivors from a pile of around 50 dead birds, which don't appear to have any ownership markings on them.
"Two actually recovered and so I reckon it's a fairly recent dumping. Those two actually flew off and the only trouble is they would fly back home and get the same result," the resident said.
The other four living birds remained near the pile of carcasses and will hopefully find new homes.
"I don't know if they were smothered, had their neck wrung or were packed into a bag," the resident said.
"Why would someone do this to them?"
By contacting the media the resident hopes someone will identify the culprit - someone whose pigeons have mysteriously disappeared.
