THE hopes of Culburra Beach's Owen Wright ending the season with a Pipeline Masters victory is over after he was knocked out in round three.
After making an impressive start to the season-ending World Surf League (WSL) Championships Tour (CT) event at the North Shore of Oahu on Tuesday, Wright couldn't keep his momentum going against Brazil's Yago Dora.
In heat three of the third round, the Culburra Beach Boardrider recorded waves of 1.00, 0.80, 5.00 and 5.50 - for a two-wave best score of 10.50.

But that wasn't enough, as Dora managed an 11.30, to progress into the round of 16.
This result sees Wright awarded 1,330 points, moving him to 34,780 for the season, to currently sit in seventh in the rankings.
But this could change depending on the results John John Florence (Hawaii), Kelly Slater (United States), and Julian Wilson (Australia), who all sit just behind him and are still in contention in Hawaii.

Despite this, the 29-year-old's extra points have edged himself closer to a possible spot on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic team, which will be confirmed at the end of this event.
