THE recently formed NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Shoalhaven District's trail bike squad passed its first local test with flying colours.
Team members Chris Strange and Luke Marshall were about to hit the road on Thursday and ride out to the Currowan Fire ground.
The team made up of six riders and they utilise four Suzuki DR 400 trail bikes for the 2019 fire season, with the plan to add more and expand the group's capabilities.
Luke and Chris said when it came to the Currowan Fire they had a communication and reconnaissance role.
A particular focus has been on community engagement.
Luke said their role and efforts had been gratefully received by the people on the fire-front.
The riders also take down the resident's details and feed it back to fire control.
They also give residents factual information on the fire, meaning people don't panic.
