How's this smoke and dust? The fires in the north of the state and dust storms in the west have conspired to turn our skies a sickly yellow and they're likely to be that way for a few days yet. Spare a thought for Sydney where the air quality index has outstripped Beijing's a couple of times during the past week.

Closer to home, a fire in a Bomaderry waste recycling centre in the early hours of Wednesday morning kept fire crews busy for several hours. They doused the fire and stayed on site in case it flared up again.
Police were also busy in the Nowra CBD, carrying out a sting and nabbing shoplifters trying the old five-finger discount at supermarkets.
Also in the CBD, ANZ customers found their bank branch closed as it undergoes a major renovation. A temporary ATM has been set up in the car park behind Nowra Mall.
And, as always, locals dug deep to help bushfire victims, donating hundreds of kilograms of clothing items to those whose homes and possessions have been lost. This should make us all proud - we are a generous community.
