Three cats that live around Cambewarra Road have been diagnosed with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) recently, and an AWL spokesperson said that was likely to be the tip of the iceberg.
She said cats with the disease often seem fine, until they get an illness and can't shake it.
Because owners don't know anything is wrong with them, they don't get tested for the virus.
The disease is caught from cat bites or deep scratches, more common when cats are prowling at night and fight over territory.
Cats with FIV can go on to live long, healthy lives with the right care, but the best treatment is to keep them safe from the disease.
FIV cannot be caught by people.
