The Department of Defence released a statement about the assistance they are offering to fires in northern NSW and Queensland.
However, when asked by the South Coast Register, a Defence spokesperson would not confirm whether HMAS Albatross at Nowra Hill or HMAS Creswell at Jervis Bay would support local firefighting efforts.
The Defence spokesperson referred back to the earlier statement made by the department, which does not contain any references to Albatross or Creswell.
Rural Fire Service district officer Ross Smith, said if aircraft were needed to fight fires in the area, they would be requested through a state system, which has a database of available aircraft across services, and their locations.
"To my knowledge, Defence don't have the aviation qualifications for bucketing [fires]," he said.
"All aircraft we use have to have training and be appropriate for the mission they are given - for example, winching operations need a two engine craft and trained crew."
However, MRH-90 crews from HMAS Alabtross' 808 Squadron have in previous years have undertaken water bombing drills with the attached Bambi Bucket in preparation for Shoalhaven fire seasons.
