Leading Seaman Brendan Menz was on board HMAS Choules recently and spoke about his life as a navy aircrewman.

He described his job as "the best in the world".

"If someone was considering a career in the navy as an aircrewman I'd say go for it," he said.

"It's the best job in the world. I wouldn't want to do anything else.

"The thing I enjoy most is the vartiety of roles you play in the aircraft and on the ground.

"No two days ever the same."

An aircrewman performs a variety of tasks - they are crucial in anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue and humanitarian disaster relief missions.

They ensure mission success aboard the MRH 90 Taipan, MH-60R Seahawk Romeo and Bell 429 Global Ranger helicopter platforms.

In the MRH-90 they are members of the helicopter's integrated tactical crews that perform search and rescue (SAR) operations and airborne mine countermeasure (AMCM) operations.

They are in charge of, and use a variety of sophisticated aircraft sensors, and undertake radar and surface surveillance and provide tactical information through the helicopter back to their ship.

They are also involved in underwater and surface warfare and launch equipment such as sonar buoys.

They also undergo advanced firearms training to be able to provide top cover to personnel undertaking fast rope insertions.

HMAS Choules' MRH-90 Taipan helicopter, call sign 'Hat-Trick', plays an integral role in the ship's operational capability.

Manned by navy's 808 Squadron based at Nowra's HMAS Albatross, the embarked flight can be utilised for search and rescue, vertical replenishment, casualty evacuation and a range of other tasks as required by the ship's command team.

The aircraft completed a series of flights during the transit from Dili, Timor-Leste to Cairns, Queensland as part of a regular training schedule.
