When Maddinson strode out crease at the CitiPower Centre, St Kilda with 195 runs against his name for Victoria he was one shot away from a personal milestone
He had helped put Victoria in charge against the South Australians and at stumps the Bushrangers were 1/362.
Maddinson re-started this innings today by taking a single and the milestone was a little closer.
He was taking things one run at a time and was soon on 197, 198 and 199 runs - the tension was mounting.
No way was he going to miss this chance.
Then a clip off the pads for a single, facing Adam Zampa, and Maddinson had his first Shield double century.
He was batting with Will Pucovski who brought up a half century.
Maddinson's innings ended when he was on 224 runs which included 23 boundaries and five sixes.
The former Bomaderry High School student still hopes to play Test cricket
"The ultimate goal is still to play Test cricket - I probably wasn't at my best when I had the opportunity," Maddinson told reporters after play on Thursday.
"If I finish my career being a good Shield player and never get that opportunity again, that's okay... That (mindset) has improved my batting.
"Not looking at a Test squad and thinking 'I've got to do this to be picked'. It's just about playing. That's something I've learnt getting a little bit older.
"I wasn't actually in (Victoria's) Shield team for the first game last year, so my goal for this year was just to play all 10 games. That's as far as it goes at the moment."
Meanwhile, on day one, Maddinson opened the innings with Marcus Harris at the CitiPower Centre, St Kilda and they destroyed the South Australian bowling attack.
They both made centuries in what was a commanding effort with the bat.
Victoria won the toss and elected to bat and Maddinson and Harris took charge.
Bat was dominating ball and after 47 overs the Vics were on top with 0/168.
As they both smashed their way past half-century and into the 80s, the main point of interest was who would reach a century first?
Harris was the first to get into the nervous 90's, while Maddinson was stuck on 81 runs.
Soon Harris was only one shot away from a century and then in a blink of an eye he was on 104 runs.
All the focus turned to Maddinson, who had just reached 82 runs.
Harris' strike-rate was 64.02, compared to Maddinson's with 53.95.
At the 53 over mark, Harris had hit three sixes, Maddinson had hit one and they both had smashed nine boundaries.
Maddinson then increased his pace and was on 99 runs.
He then worked a single of his pads to bring up his century.
Maddo had 11 boundaries and two sixes to his name as he reached his century.
Harris was out shortly after for 116 runs.
The match continues and the Vic are set to post a massive first innings score.
