Gilkes was named to make his one day debut for the Blues against the powerful Western Australian side for today's (Monday, September 30) Marsh One-Day Cup at Drummoyne Oval.
The Ulladulla junior was named as a batsman and is still waiting to pull on the keeper's gloves for the Blues.
The encounter was marred by rain, reduced to the 35 over contest and the visitors, after being sent in, made 6/210 after batting first.
The Blues ended up getting 7/235 but Western Australia won under the DLS (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern) Method.
Gilkes' blood, when the Blues lost its first wicket (Jack Edwards) with the score on 1/12, might have started to pump a bit faster.
Moises Henriques and Daniel Hughes, however, managed to steady the innings with a brilliant partnership
He came in at 2-154 after a blazing 75 runs from Henriques.
Gilkes came in with 23.3 overs gone and got off the mark with a single.
The experienced Hughes was still batting well and was eyeing off a century.
The Ulladulla junior was content to give the senior batsman most of the strike.
He got to celebrate Hughes' wonderful century and help his team get closer to victory
Gilkes then opened his shoulders and hit his first boundary as a NSW one-day player before being dismissed for 10 runs off 16 balls.
Hughes went on to make 112 runs and was named man of the match.
