Health emergency
Unions Shoalhaven congratulates SCR editor John Hanscombe and Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips for telling the real story of what is happening at Shoalhaven Hospital. We need urgent action to support our hospital's staff who are so overworked and under resourced. This is an ongoing issue, not something that can be explained away by tourism and the flu season. Where is the $434 million that is needed for the redevelopment? We cannot wait four more years, it is needed now. It would be much more gratifying if we were getting 220 extra beds, with staff, to support patient ratios and needs, instead of car parking spaces. Regional areas should have access to the same resources, and staff, as cities.

Perhaps we should all come together to support our doctors, nurses and working staff at Shoalhaven Hospital and march for the upgrade and resources that are so urgently needed.

Under great strain
Three years ago I was booked in for day surgery, however the surgeon specialist insisted I stay in overnight Then all hell broke out, as there was not a single bed available in the hospital. However the nurse in charge asked if I'd mind if she set up a bed in the storeroom. No real complaint
However our experiece for my wife suffering a painfull leg clot was distressing. We waited from 6pm to 1am, among some 40 crying children and babies. The triage nurse was flat out bandaging patients. Then more trouble as the very junior doctor tried to find out what to do. He gave my wife an order for ultrasound the next day as it only operates in the morning. Next day she ended up in ET and a Dr Pratt did wonderful work on her, ordering his home nursing staff to follow up his INR treatment. The wonderful nurses there are are under such enormous stress and can't say enough credit for them.

Contribution recognised
I want to express our appreciation for the article published by Robert Crawford about my father. The family are grateful for this acknowledgment of his contribution to history.

Wake up, councillors
We are experiencing a climate emergency. The sooner people who are obstructing solutions get out of the way, the better. Can't wait for the council elections to rectify this.
What will it take? The Amazon is burning, Queensland is burning, our fire season has already begun. I attended the Sydney Students Strike so I could be with my daughter and grandsons. The kids get it, but we are running out of time. The councillors who assume climate change is not an issue for Shoalhaven residents do so at their peril. The kids have given us a wake up call, let's not let them down.

Church and state separate
Australia is a secular state, as opposed to countries such as Israel and Pakistan where all laws, social actions and communication are bound by the official state religion. There are people who get a lot from their faith whether it be Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity or Buddhism. However, religion and politics must be kept separate. It is extremely concerning that PM Morrison wanted to have the pastor from Hillsong Church Brian Houston, as a guest at the White House formal rose dinner. Mr Houston was denied entry by the US officials as they believe he had knowledge of his father's child abuse which he did not divulge at the time. More concerning is the PM's new line of "not responding to gossip" - there was no unequivocal NO when asked about his invitation to Mr Houston. Perhaps his "gossip" is the equivalent of "fake news". We must be vigilant that no singular faith/belief influences our political system.
