The church was a gift to the community of Meroo Meadow from their landlord David Berry.
The foundation stone was laid on October 3, 1889 by Mrs John Hay.
David Berry died in September 1889, leaving his heir John Hay to supervise the construction of the church.
The celebration was a grand occasion, with a large crowd and the press attending.
It became as intended a church for all Christians, regular services were held and weekly Sunday School was conducted by clergy from Berry churches. Afternoon tea followed the service. It was a time for fellowship and social connection.
Church services continue to this day on the third Sunday of each month at 2pm. Everyone is welcome.
A special service will be held by the Reverend Vernon James on Sunday, October 20 at 2pm to commemorate the historic occasion 130 years ago.
The Friends of Meroo Union Church extends a welcome to come and celebrate and appreciate this place of worship.
Anyone who has connections to the church and has photos or memorabilia to add to the display is also welcome. Afternoon tea will follow the service, as always.
Meroo Union Church is located on the corner of Boxells Land and Princes Highway, Meroo Meadow. Contact Rae on 4448 6048 for more details.
