There will be a beautiful range of reasonably priced, handcrafted goods on display in both the gallery and in the takeaway sales area. To learn more about the techniques the artists use to create their works, head to the gallery forecourt on Saturday, September 14 between 10am-2pm for a day of free live demonstrations.
Also on show from September 7 to 28 is Iyanla - a solo exhibition of textile works by Uruguay born, Sydney based artist Paula do Prado. Using traditional techniques such as crochet and hand beading, the artist combines everyday materials such as recycled fabrics and yarns with symbolically and historically charged materials such as trade beads and seeds.
Shoalhaven Arts is supported by the following organisations. Click the link to learn more:
Iyanla in the West African Yoruba language means 'great ancestral mother'. The artworks use domestic cloths collected in Uruguay and Argentina and passed down from women in the artist's family. The domestic cloths reference the capacity for textile as archive. Each piece becomes a sensory trigger to explore the intersections of family history, the Atlantic slave trade, colonisation and migration.
Paula will be conducting a Bind and Release textile workshop on Saturday, September 28 from 10am-3pm. This is an open-ended workshop where participants will be encouraged to explore, play and experiment with textile materials such as fabric and yarn remnants to find visual expression in the materials. Many of the materials provided are from Paula do Prado's past artworks. The artist will share stories and teach techniques of wrapping, binding and creating bundles with fabric, yarn and thread. This workshop is suitable to all levels of ability and lunch and materials is provided. Book via humanitix.com.au.
