The couple had completed this year's event from Bondi to Batt Reef Bash in Port Douglas and were on their way home when they had an accident in between Atherton and Innisfail, Far North Queensland.

"MarieJose and I are doing okay and continuing to improve day by day," Mr Kennedy said.

"Your support and messages have been overwhelming and we are truly thankful."

The couple are currently in Townsville hospital undergoing treatment, with MarieJose still in Intensive care on a ventilator assisting her breathing.

"She is suffering a broken neck and multiple spinal fractures," Mr Kennedy said.

"Her ribs are broken from top to bottom on one side and four-five broken on the other side with multiple breaks.

"She also has a broken ankle and her opposite knee was dislocated.

"She had a punctured lung and was placed in a coma at the scene. "

She is now conscious and communicating via writing.

It is hoped the tubes will be removed in coming days but Mr Kennedy said that depends on many things.

Mr Kennedy has undergone an operation for a broken/dislocated neck.

"They re-positioned the vertebrae and inserted an artificial disc and did a fusion," he said.

He's now sporting a halo for the next few months, which is screwed into his skull, supporting his head while his neck heals.

He has a broken sternum and leg and a fair share of cuts and bruises but has been up and about.

"Apart from some nerve pain I'm doing pretty well," he said.

"We are extremely grateful to have friends and family by our side throughout this ordeal and are looking forward to getting back on our feet and closer to home."
