RFS crews transported to river island by mechanical punt.
RURAL Fire Service crews from Shoalhaven Heads, Greenwell Point, Broughton Vale, Callala Bay and Shoalhaven Deputy Group 1 have battled a grass fire on Pig Island in the Shoalhaven River.
Crews had to be transported over to the island, north of the Terara village, by the mechanical punt to battle the fire reported around midnight on Saturday, August 17,
The fire was burning in thick kikuyu grass on the island.
RFS said it is understood the fire might have been the result of winds whipping up an extinguished pile burn.
Crews remained on the island for a number of hours to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
The dry weather the Shoalhaven is experiencing along with strong winds has proved to be a challenge for fire crews across the district over the past few weeks.
Crews battled a fire at Mundamia, west of Nowra, on Friday and at least six suspicious fires lit in the Culbura Beach and Orient Point areas on Saturday.
If anyone sees any suspicious activities they are urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
