This race was the sixth round of the 2019 Optus Series and was held on a cold and windy morning.
Vitiello (Bomaderry Vet Hospital/Coffeeliscious) crossed the line three lengths ahead of Gavin Nethery (Allen Price & Scarratts), Rob Rix (Access Storage) and Gary Bryce (BVH/Coffeeliscious).
Also close up in this sprint finish was Geoff Lockhart (Access), Mark Robbins (Access), Anthony Field (Goulburn CC), Ian Kielly (APS) and Jo Chalain (APS).
These riders had entered the final three-kilometre run to the line as a compact group and holding almost a minute lead over a hard-chasing bunch of riders from the far back of the field.
Into the final kilometre Kielly was driving hard on the front to set up a finish for Nethery with Vitiello moving into the slip stream.
As they leaders turned into the final 300 metres for the dash to the line, Vitiello cut loose with his sprint and raced away with the win.
Mark Williams (Access) led the next group of riders over the line just under a minute after Vitiello had taken his win.
Williams was in 10th position ahead of Daniel Wells (Allen Price & Scarratts), Shane Wood (APS), Nathan Crump (APS), Tim Devlin (NVC), Mark Astley (BVH), Jade Colligan (BVH) and Tony Kuipers (BVH).
The weather conditions kept some riders away but 25 others signed on to start.
The heavy weekend weather had seen the postponement of the Camden Interclub on Saturday due to high winds and wind damage on their course.
The scratch riders for this sixth round of the Optus Series saw Aaron Coghlan (Access) and Robert Parker (St George CC) on scratch, however Coghlan dropped out at half distance, still suffering from a virus that kept him off his bike last week.
Parker chased alone and was holding the next bunch of Astley, Wood and Colligan for time until they gathered in Wells, Kuipers and Crump who had started just ahead.
The strength of this group gathered in all except the nine riders at the front and the fastest time of the race went to Shane Wood.
The Allen Price & Scarratts team took the win in the team class from Access Stortage and Bomaderry Vet Hospital/Coffeeliscious.
The Nowra Velo Club has no local racing next weekend with the Illawarra Cycle Club's Ken Dinnerville Memorial on the NSW open race calendar being held on the Breadalbane/Gunning course.
Nowra Velo Club conducts regular road race events including handicaps, graded scratch races and criterium events most Sundays.
New members are always welcome and regular rides are run that cater for most levels of interest.
