The opinion page SCR July 12 again indicates a massive shift to the left in the thinking of the SCR crew by the publishing of an opinion piece by Zoe Wundenberg.

Lets unpick this piece a tad and conduct a fact check if you don't mind.

The government`s HECS shift was the primary target of the writer veiled by accusations of displays of hypocrisy and much self indulgence. The lowering of the HECS debt threshold is simply reinforcing the principle of a user pays system.

The reference to the reduction of penalty rates was as a result of a determination by the Fair Work Commission, you know the mob that is predominantly staffed by ex union representatives giving it a much Labor flavour does it not.

The reduction of penalty rates issue should be directed at Bill Shorten and Co via their dodgy EBA`s that reduced their members penalty rates with much gay abandon for the direct benefit of the bigger Unions.

The reference to the pollies pay rises is as a result of the Independent Remuneration Tribunal`s determination and always accepted regardless of which party is in government.

To the SCR I would suggest you refer to the outcome of the last election in that the people rejected Labor and their class warfare tactics and returned a much more mainstream government to power.

It started with the Reserve Bank dropping the cash rate .25 of a per cent to 1 per cent. After, there was encouragement for borrowers, to drop inhibitions go the full Monty and borrow at the big end of the spectrum.

The next move interest rate cuts, which led to the average worker receiving an extra $1080 or $20.75 a week; working husbands and wives an extra $41.50 a week.

Then in act of extreme generosity and after lengthy deliberation the government decided to match the cash rate depreciation and drop the retiree/pensioner deeming rate .25 of a per cent to 3 per cent (someone has to pay for the expected budget surplus).

The government indicate that couples on the upper deeming rate, after deductions can expect an extra $40. 5o a fortnight. A combined weekly amount of $10.13 each; an increase of roughly half the amount taxpayers receive.

The evidence concludes an interest rate cut is bad news for savers, who appear to be doing all the heavy lifting.

There always was a simple method of giving our elderly residents in care the lifestyle and treatment they deserve.

Give every resident a diary which can be read and signed every day by a member of the nursing staff and the administration staff in the presence of the resident. Nobody could slip through the care and treatment cracks. If a resident was to be unable to complete a daily entry, they should be under closer observation anyway. Visiting friends and relatives would also be able to follow the care trail by reading the diary.

I've done a lot of communications work in aged care centres, and never left a job without seeing the lighter side of their lifestyle. Our elderly built this nation, and we owe them the best in care and consideration.
